Cottage Style Rugs And Artwork
If you're decorating your home in the cottage style, then you want to choose your rugs and artwork carefully to give your decorating scheme a coordinated look. The walls and floor are the largest items in the room and what you cover them with will have a big impact on the overall effect of your design.

When it comes to rugs, there are a few ways to go, and it depends on what type of cottage decor is prefered. A more feminine and elegant style might cry out for a vintage style, floral, oriental sculpted rug with pale colors. A more modernistic look would benifit from adding a sisal rug on top of hardwood floors. If it's just a comfy and relaxed atmosphere you seek, then consider a rug that is a solid color matching the wall color - or a simple pattern if there is not already a pattern in the furniture fabric.

A lot of different wall art and artwork accomodates the cottage style. A beach theme looks good with watercolors of boats or the beach in matching frames. A garden design will again benefit from watercolors or at least light colored paintings of flowers and gardens.

Add some interest by putting things on the wall that one might not normally see there, or hang typical items in a different way. Instead of simply banging a nail into the wall, get an interesting glass knob or hook and hang it high up, then use a long length of satin braided roping or ribbon to suspend the artwork from the knob. Try running a board near the cieling and suspend paintings from long cords.

Another idea that will add interest to a wall is to hang vintage plates or casserole covers in a pattern on the wall. This can be especially cost-effective as you can get casserole covers that don't have the bottoms pretty cheaply at yard sales and in antique malls. Hang them on the wall using decorative plate holders for added appeal.

When hanging any type of artwork in your cottage style decorating theme, lay it out on the floor first so you can be sure to get the right placement of the pieces. It's always better to use an odd number of items in a vignette, so go with five or seven plates in a geometric pattern instead of six or eight.
